Pier FishingMyrtle Beach and the surrounding Grand Strand offer several area piers that are perfect for a full day of fishing fun. In North Myrtle Beach there's the Cherry Grove Pier, where a world record 1780 lb. Tiger Shark was once caught! Myrtle Beach is home to four different piers: the Apache Pier (the longest wooden fishing pier on the east coast), 14th Avenue Pier (featuring a restaurant with views out over the water), Second Avenue Pier (just south of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk ) and Springmaid Pier (voted best pier for fishing by the Myrtle Beach Herald). Further south, visitors will find the Pier at Garden City and Surfside Pier. Great fishing is waiting off any of these, with most offering rod and reel rentals. Fishing licenses are not necessary for pier fishing. The type of fish lurking off the piers varies, but some of the most common include flounder, whiting, croakers and black drum, with some larger species like mackerel and bluefish caught from time to time. You also may land some more unique catches like skates or blue crabs!
Horseback Riding at Inlet Point PlantationGet in touch with your inner cowboy or cowgirl with a relaxing horseback ride along the beach or Intracoastal Waterway! Inlet Point Plantation in North Myrtle Beach offers fun horseback tours year round featuring fantastic views of Waites Island and the plantation property. Riders can choose to enjoy a sunny afternoon ride or scenic sunset rides at dusk. Children are sure to love their pony rides that lead them through the beautiful pecan groves on the plantation. Tours for beginner to experienced riders ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for every visitor.
Myrtle Beach State ParkDid you know that Myrtle Beach State Park was the first South Carolina state park, opened in 1936? Well if you didn't, you do now! There are plenty of great (and cheap or free) things to do among the beautiful live oaks and sand dunes of Myrtle Beach State Park. For those looking to discover all the aspects, try their park Scavenger Hunt, which will lead you on a self-guided tour to find unique flora, fauna and wildlife around the area. Fishing is available off the park pier, there are multiple walking and biking trails throughout the area and playgrounds and recreational games like horseshoes, bocce and cornhole are available to guests. The park is one of the few places along the South Carolina coast to have a maritime forest, and rare species like loggerhead turtles and bald eagles are known to frequent the area!
Brookgreen GardensOne of the finest botanical gardens on the east coast, Brookgreen Gardens is a peaceful sanctuary that has long been one of the Grand Strand's favorite destinations. Trip Advisor has recently named Brookgreen Gardens one of the top ten public gardens in the US, and a stroll among the sprawling live oaks, azaleas and lilies is sure to put any traveler at ease. In addition to the amazing diversity of flora and fauna, Brookgreen Gardens also holds the distinction as the first public sculpture garden in the US. Throughout the gardens you will be able to gaze at works of art by artists from the early 19th century to modern day. The garden's sculpture collection contains over 1,200 pieces by over 300 artists. In addition, Brookgreen Gardens also features a wildlife preserve accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. You will be able to survey animals such as otters, Spanish horses, gray foxes, bald eagles and alligators. From April-October you can check out Brookgreen Gardens' Whispering Wings Butterfly Experience, an environment housing hundreds of different types of butterflies and detailing their life cycle and importance on our ecosystems. During your next Myrtle Beach vacation, be sure to set aside a day to visit Brookgreen Gardens!
